Analysis of the Current Status and Development Trends of China's Automotive Parts Market in 2022

  • Release time: 2022-06-21

With the effective control of the pandemic, automakers across the country are gradually resuming operations. Addressing the practical challenges faced by automotive enterprises, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), in collaboration with relevant local authorities and departments, has swiftly taken action, cumulatively facilitating solutions to over 4,000 batches of issues related to logistics transportation and resumption of work and production. Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang have all introduced policies to support the development of the automotive parts industry.

Definition of Automotive Components

Automotive components encompass all units constituting the overall automotive assembly and products serving automotive manufacturing. As the foundation of the automotive industry, automotive components are essential for its sustained and healthy development. These components are diverse and broadly categorized into seventeen types.

Driven by China's rapid automotive industry growth, increasing vehicle ownership, and an expanding automotive parts market, China's automotive components sector has experienced swift development, with overall growth rates exceeding those of the domestic vehicle manufacturing industry. Data indicates that China's automotive parts sales revenue grew from 3.46 trillion yuan in 2016 to 4.57 trillion yuan in 2020, achieving a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2%. Projections suggest automotive parts sales revenue will reach 4.9 trillion yuan in 2021 and 5.2 trillion yuan in 2022.

1. Accelerated Automation and Intelligence in Automotive Components

Labor shortages and the fading demographic dividend have sharply increased labor costs for industrial manufacturers. In recent years, automotive component enterprises have accelerated automation to enhance efficiency and achieve sustainable development. As traditional industrial automation control technologies evolve toward integration, networking, and intelligence, component manufacturers can now precisely control procurement, production, warehousing, and supply processes.

2. Trend Toward High-End and Precision Automotive Components

As China's industrial manufacturing capabilities advance, domestic processing has evolved from extensive, manual methods toward refined, automated techniques. Domestic automotive component manufacturers are increasingly integrating into global automotive supply chains, progressively achieving high-end and precision manufacturing standards.

3. Trend Toward Modular Manufacturing and Integrated Supply

The integration and modularization of automotive components refers to the technological approach of combining functions previously achieved by multiple parts into a single module through innovative design and processes. This enables a single module to replace multiple components. Such integration enhances vehicle assembly efficiency, optimizes space utilization, reduces overall weight, and improves vehicle performance. Simultaneously, the rapid advancement of automated production and smart factory technologies is driving the informatization, digitization, and intelligent transformation of the automotive manufacturing industry, promoting modular manufacturing and integrated supply among automotive parts enterprises.

4. Gradual Development of New Energy Vehicles

China's vehicle ownership has surged significantly, leading to a sharp increase in resource demand and increasingly severe air pollution. Benefiting from the introduction of energy-saving and environmental protection policies, the energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, new energy vehicle, and related parts industries will become new investment growth points in the future. Within the existing industrial and energy structures, encouraging the production and consumption of low-energy, small-displacement vehicles has become an effective pathway for energy conservation and emission reduction in the automotive industry.

5. The Trend Toward Lightweighting

The rapid expansion of the automotive industry has led to a surge in global vehicle ownership, significantly increasing petroleum consumption. Vehicle exhaust emissions have caused a series of problems, including deteriorating air quality and the greenhouse effect. Energy security and environmental protection have thus become key concerns for nations worldwide. Lightweight design reduces fuel consumption, delivering cost savings to users while also lowering greenhouse gas emissions to benefit environmental protection. Currently, global automotive lightweighting has entered an advanced implementation phase, with new materials increasingly applied in mass production as technologies advance. Notably, expanding aluminum alloy production capacity and improved forging techniques will drive greater adoption of aluminum alloys in the automotive parts sector.

6. Automotive Aftermarket Development Trends

According to National Bureau of Statistics data, China's civilian vehicle ownership reached 302 million units in 2021, marking a 7.35% year-on-year increase. Driven by the continuous growth in China's vehicle fleet, coupled with factors such as a younger primary consumer base and personalized demand, the Chinese automotive modification industry is poised for rapid expansion and will become a vital component of the automotive supply chain.
